How to Recognize and Avoid Scams

At NIFEDCU, your financial security is our highest priority. Scammers are always on the lookout for new ways to exploit unsuspecting individuals. We would like to inform you about a rise in fraudulent schemes in our area. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, you can protect yourself from potential scams. Here are some common scams and steps you can take to help protect yourself.

Be Aware of Phishing/Smishing Scams - Fraudsters utilize this form of scamming by sending out emails (Phishing Scams) or text messages (Smishing Scams) that look like they are from legitimate businesses in the hopes that you will click on a link and input personal information such as account numbers and passwords. These messages can say that your password is about to expire, that a large purchase was made on one of your accounts, that you owe a bill, etc. Be on the look out for emails/texts that say you must act immediately and ones that have bad grammar/misspellings. Do not open any links or attachments. Instead, call the business and ask them if this is an actual correspondence sent by their company.

Exercise Extreme Caution When Granting Access to Your PC - Be wary if you receive a request from someone claiming that your computer has been hacked or is experiencing technical issues that require remote access for assistance. Scammers frequently employ this strategy to take control of your system and steal sensitive information. What easier way to gain access to all of your information than you granting it? Always verify the identity of the requester by contacting the company directly through a known and trusted method. Even if they pressure you that time is of the essence. Take the time to find out. Legitimate companies will never ask for remote access without prior agreement. Safeguarding your digital devices is just as crucial as protecting your personal information.

Protect Your Finances and Your Heart - Romance scams can be a long con. A criminal creates a fake online identity to gain a victim's affection. The scammer will then use the illusion of trust to manipulate and steal from the victim by asking for money and in extreme cases asking for access to your account information. Research the person’s photo and profile using online searches to see if the image, name, or details have been used elsewhere. Never send money to anyone you have only communicated with online or by phone.

How to Detect a Card Skimmer - Skimming is when a fraudster places an illegal device over a gas pump card reader, ATM or any other point-of-sale (POS) terminal. When you insert your card, these devices collect your card and PIN numbers. They are usually bulky where you insert your card or the pin pad will be slightly off center and have buttons that are hard to push. You can wiggle/pull on the card reader and if it moves at all there is probably a skimmer attached to it. Additionally, consider using contactless payment methods or mobile payment apps, which reduce the need to physically insert your card and therefore decrease your risk of being skimmed.

Use Strong, Unique Passwords- Create complex passwords for your online accounts and change them regularly.

Monitor Your Accounts Regularly - Check your account statements and transactions frequently. Report any unauthorized activity to us immediately.
